English Short Story_The Stoic_Jansi

“Why, Sathya? Why did you get so angry when he said I was darker than a crow? You nearly pushed him off the bridge. Even I was frightened for a moment.”

“He was an idiot. He was saying all that just to insult you. It was wrong to let him go without a proper response.”

“All right, all right. Calm down… calm down…”

“Hari, does a person’s beauty lie in the colour of their skin? And do you know what makes a man truly handsome?”

“Tell me.”

“Manoj knew that you were going to be my husband, yet he came to me with improper intentions. His physical appearance, his height, his complexion—none of that is true beauty, Hari.”

“I remember reading something in Tamil literature long ago. It stayed with me: ‘The courage of not looking at another man’s wife’—that is Peranmai, true honour. Yes, that is what real manliness is, Hari.”

“It was only after I realised that you possessed that quality that I agreed to marry you.”

“That beauty of yours is enough for me, Hari.”

Hearing these words from the woman who was soon to become his wife, the man of true honour stood speechless.
